Platycerium wandae, commonly known as the Queen Staghorn Fern, is a spectacular large-growing epiphytic fern prized for its dramatic form and impressive mature size. With broad shield fronds and long, sculptural fertile fronds, this collectible Platycerium creates a bold tropical display that stands out in any serious fern or rare plant collection.

Plant Characteristics

Platycerium wandae develops large, textured green fronds with a distinctive architectural growth habit. Its basal shield fronds form a protective structure around the root zone, while the fertile fronds extend outward and downward in long, branching shapes that become increasingly dramatic as the plant matures.

This species is known for becoming significantly larger than many commonly grown staghorn ferns. Mature specimens can develop an impressive spread when given proper mounting space, humidity, airflow, and consistent care. It is best suited for mounting on wood, boards, baskets, or other breathable supports rather than being grown like a traditional terrestrial houseplant.

Care Guide

Provide bright, indirect light or filtered sunlight. Avoid prolonged exposure to intense midday sun, especially in warm climates.

Water thoroughly when the mounting material or growing medium begins to approach dryness, but allow good airflow around the roots between waterings. Maintain moderate to high humidity, ideally around 60–80%, while ensuring excellent ventilation.

Platycerium wandae prefers warm temperatures around 65–85°F and should be protected from cold drafts. Use a loose, airy medium such as sphagnum moss, orchid bark, or other epiphytic growing materials that retain some moisture without remaining waterlogged. Care level is generally moderate, especially for mature specimens.

Why Collectors Love It

Collectors love Platycerium wandae for its enormous mature presence, unusual frond structure, and dramatic epiphytic growth habit. It is an outstanding centerpiece for collectors seeking a large, architectural staghorn fern with strong tropical character.

I am so incredibly late on posting this video. This plant came in 3 weeks ago now and I’m just getting to posting this and I almost thought I wasn’t going to. My editing software was not working for anything, but I got it all fixed so now I can start getting out lots of videos we’ve recorded recently!🪴
