Platycerium wandae is a spectacular giant staghorn fern prized for its dramatic sculptural form and impressive mature size. Native to New Guinea, this collectible epiphytic fern develops broad shield fronds and long, branching fertile fronds, making it an exceptional statement plant for serious fern collectors and tropical plant enthusiasts.

Plant Characteristics

Platycerium wandae produces two distinct types of fronds. Its shield fronds grow broad and upright, gradually forming a large protective base around the root zone, while the fertile fronds extend outward and downward with deeply divided, antler-like shapes. The foliage has a firm yet slightly textured surface with a natural green to silvery-green appearance.

This giant staghorn fern has an epiphytic growth habit and naturally grows attached to trees rather than in traditional soil. When mature and grown under ideal conditions, Platycerium wandae can become extremely large, with an impressive spread that makes it best suited for mounting on boards, baskets, or sturdy vertical supports.

Care Guide

Provide bright, filtered or indirect light while protecting the plant from intense midday sun. Water thoroughly when the mounting material or growing medium begins to dry, allowing excess water to drain freely.

Maintain high humidity, ideally around 60–80%, with good air circulation. Temperatures between 65–85°F are ideal, and the plant should be protected from cold temperatures below approximately 55°F.

Use a loose, airy epiphytic medium such as sphagnum moss, orchid bark, or coconut husk rather than dense potting soil. Platycerium wandae is generally considered a moderate to advanced-care staghorn fern due to its humidity, airflow, and mounting requirements.

Why Collectors Love It

Collectors appreciate Platycerium wandae for its massive mature form, distinctive shield fronds, and dramatic antler-shaped foliage. Its impressive scale and architectural growth make it one of the most striking collectible Platycerium species for tropical plant displays.

I am so incredibly late on posting this video. This plant came in 3 weeks ago now and I’m just getting to posting this and I almost thought I wasn’t going to. My editing software was not working for anything, but I got it all fixed so now I can start getting out lots of videos we’ve recorded recently!🪴
