Platycerium ridleyi Christ, commonly known as Ridley’s Staghorn Fern, is a distinctive tropical epiphytic fern prized for its dramatic sculptural form and highly ornamental fronds. Native to tropical regions of Southeast Asia, including Sumatra, Borneo, Malaysia, and Thailand, this collectible Platycerium makes an exceptional display plant for fern enthusiasts and tropical plant collectors.
Plant Characteristics
Platycerium ridleyi produces two visually distinct types of fronds: protective sterile shield fronds that grow around the base and fertile fronds that develop outward in an architectural, antler-like form. The foliage has a firm texture and an unusual structure that gives mature specimens a striking sculptural appearance.
As an epiphytic fern, it naturally grows attached to trees rather than rooted in conventional soil. Its compact mounting habit combined with increasingly dramatic fronds as it matures makes it especially suitable for vertical displays, mounted collections, and tropical greenhouse environments.
Care Guide
Provide bright, indirect or filtered light and protect the fronds from intense direct afternoon sun. Maintain consistently high humidity with good air circulation, as this tropical fern naturally occurs in humid forest environments.
Ideal temperatures are approximately 60–85°F. Water thoroughly, then allow the growing medium to approach dryness before watering again; prolonged waterlogging should be avoided. Use an airy, fast-draining epiphytic medium such as sphagnum moss combined with bark or other coarse materials. Platycerium ridleyi can also be mounted onto wood or similar support. Its care level is best considered moderate to advanced because stable humidity, airflow, and careful watering are important for long-term growth.
