Platycerium elephantotis, commonly known as the Elephant Ear Staghorn Fern, is a striking tropical epiphytic fern admired for its exceptionally broad, rounded fronds and bold sculptural form. Unlike many staghorn ferns with deeply forked antler-like fronds, this species develops large, shield-like foliage that gives it a distinctive and dramatic appearance for collectors.

Plant Characteristics

Platycerium elephantotis produces two main types of fronds: sterile shield fronds that protect the root area and large fertile fronds that grow outward in a broad, rounded shape. The foliage has a soft, slightly fuzzy surface that helps the plant conserve moisture.

This species has an epiphytic growth habit and naturally grows attached to trees rather than in traditional soil. Mature plants can develop impressively large fronds, often reaching approximately 2–3 feet under favorable growing conditions. It is especially well suited for mounting on wood, cork, or other breathable supports.

Care Guide

Provide bright, indirect light and protect the plant from intense midday sun, which may scorch the fronds. Water thoroughly once the mounting material or growing medium begins to dry, allowing excess moisture to drain freely.

Maintain moderate to high humidity, ideally around 60–80%, together with good air circulation. Platycerium elephantotis prefers warm temperatures between approximately 65–85°F and should be protected from prolonged cold conditions.

Use a loose, airy medium such as sphagnum moss, orchid bark, coco fiber, or another epiphyte-friendly mix. Avoid dense potting soil and prolonged waterlogging. Its care level is generally considered moderate.

Why Collectors Love It

Collectors appreciate Platycerium elephantotis for its unusually broad fronds, impressive mature size, and unmistakable tropical appearance. Its dramatic foliage makes it an excellent statement piece for staghorn fern collections and indoor tropical displays.

I am so incredibly late on posting this video. This plant came in 3 weeks ago now and I’m just getting to posting this and I almost thought I wasn’t going to. My editing software was not working for anything, but I got it all fixed so now I can start getting out lots of videos we’ve recorded recently!🪴
