Philodendron Black Cardinal Variegated, botanically known as Philodendron erubescens ‘Black Cardinal’ Variegated, is a striking collectible Philodendron prized for its deep burgundy to near-black foliage accented by unpredictable cream, yellow, or light green variegation. Each new leaf develops its own unique pattern, giving this tropical houseplant a bold, high-contrast appearance that stands out in any rare plant collection.
Plant Characteristics
Philodendron Black Cardinal Variegated produces broad, oval to slightly elongated leaves with a smooth, thick, leathery texture. New foliage may emerge in bronze, burgundy, or deep red tones before maturing into darker shades, while the variegated sections can appear as marbling, streaks, sectors, or splashes.
Unlike climbing Philodendrons, Black Cardinal has a compact, self-heading growth habit, forming a dense rosette rather than long vines. Under good indoor growing conditions, mature plants can develop substantial foliage and a fuller, upright form.
