Hoya vitellinoides Sp. Sumatra (Hoya vitellinoides Bakh.f.) is a striking large-leaf Hoya admired for its bold foliage and dramatic network of dark green veins. Native to the tropical regions of Sumatra and Java, this collectible Hoya creates a strong visual presence and is especially appealing to enthusiasts who appreciate unusual foliage plants.

Plant Characteristics

This tropical climbing Hoya develops broad, elongated leaves with a thick, firm texture and a distinctive pattern of prominent venation. The light to medium green leaf surface contrasts beautifully with the darker veins, giving each leaf an intricate, almost hand-drawn appearance.

Hoya vitellinoides has a vigorous vining growth habit and performs best when trained on a trellis, pole, or other vertical support. Under warm, humid conditions, mature plants can produce impressively large foliage and long climbing vines. Final leaf size and growth rate may vary depending on light, humidity, nutrition, and growing conditions.

Care Guide

Provide bright, indirect light for healthy growth and well-defined foliage. Avoid prolonged exposure to intense midday sunlight, which may scorch the leaves. Water thoroughly when the upper layer of the growing medium has partially dried, allowing excess water to drain completely.

Maintain humidity around 60–80% with consistent air circulation. The ideal temperature range is approximately 65–85°F, and the plant should be protected from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F.

Use a chunky, well-draining soil mix containing orchid bark, coco chips, perlite, and a small amount of moisture-retentive material. A pot with drainage holes and stable climbing support is recommended. This plant has a moderate care level.

Why Collectors Love It

Collectors love Hoya vitellinoides Sp. Sumatra for its oversized leaves, striking dark venation, and impressive mature appearance. It is an excellent choice for Hoya enthusiasts seeking a distinctive tropical climbing plant with exceptional foliage.

I am so incredibly late on posting this video. This plant came in 3 weeks ago now and I’m just getting to posting this and I almost thought I wasn’t going to. My editing software was not working for anything, but I got it all fixed so now I can start getting out lots of videos we’ve recorded recently!🪴
