Hoya tomataensis Sp. Sulawesi is a rare tropical climbing plant valued for its elegant foliage and distinctive Indonesian origin. Scientifically recognized as Hoya tomataensis T.Green & Kloppenb., this Sulawesi-endemic Hoya makes a refined addition to rare houseplant collections, especially for growers who appreciate unusual foliage, tropical vines, and collectible Indonesian plant species.

Plant Characteristics

This collectible Hoya develops smooth, glossy, deep-green leaves with an elongated oval to lance-shaped form, pointed tips, and attractive contrasting venation. Its firm, waxy foliage grows along slender twining stems, creating an airy and graceful appearance. The climbing or trailing growth habit makes it ideal for a small trellis, hoop, shelf, or hanging display. Mature vines can extend several feet indoors but may be pruned and trained to maintain a compact shape.

Care Guide

Provide bright, indirect light to support healthy growth and potential flowering while protecting the foliage from intense midday sun. Water thoroughly once the growing medium is mostly dry, allowing excess water to drain completely. Maintain moderate to high humidity, ideally around 50–70%, with consistent airflow. Keep temperatures between 65–80°F (18–27°C) and protect the plant from temperatures below 55°F (13°C). Use a chunky, fast-draining Hoya soil mix containing orchid bark, perlite, coco chips, and a small amount of quality potting medium. This rare Hoya has a moderate care level and should never remain in waterlogged soil.

Why Collectors Love It

Collectors appreciate Hoya tomataensis for its uncommon Sulawesi provenance, beautifully veined foliage, and elegant climbing form. It offers a sophisticated botanical look while remaining easy to display in smaller indoor plant collections.

I am so incredibly late on posting this video. This plant came in 3 weeks ago now and I’m just getting to posting this and I almost thought I wasn’t going to. My editing software was not working for anything, but I got it all fixed so now I can start getting out lots of videos we’ve recorded recently!🪴
