Hoya sulawesiana Red (Hoya sulawesiana S.Rahayu & Rodda) is a distinctive Indonesian Hoya native to Sulawesi, prized for its long, narrow foliage and striking reddish to purplish tones on young growth. Its sculptural leaves and climbing habit give this collectible Hoya a refined, exotic appearance that stands out in any tropical plant collection.
Plant Characteristics
Hoya sulawesiana develops elongated lanceolate to elliptic leaves with a firm, somewhat leathery texture. Mature leaves can become impressively long, while younger stems and foliage may display brownish-purple to reddish coloration before gradually maturing to green. The plant has a vigorous climbing and twining growth habit and can produce long vines when provided with proper support. In habitat and mature cultivation, the vines may become several feet long, making a trellis or vertical support especially beneficial.
Care Guide
Grow Hoya sulawesiana Red in bright, indirect light. Some gentle morning or late-afternoon sun can help maintain compact growth, but intense midday sunlight should be avoided.
Water thoroughly, then allow the upper portion of the growing medium to partially dry before watering again. Maintain moderate to high humidity, ideally around 60–80%, with consistent airflow.
Keep temperatures around 65–85°F and protect the plant from prolonged cold conditions. Use a loose, airy, fast-draining Hoya mix containing materials such as orchid bark, coco chips, perlite, and a small amount of moisture-retentive substrate.
