Hoya imbricata Decne. is an extraordinary tropical climbing plant known for its unusual, overlapping leaves that grow closely against tree bark or a textured support. Unlike most trailing Hoyas, this collectible species creates a shingled foliage display, making it a fascinating choice for experienced Hoya enthusiasts and collectors of unusual epiphytic plants.

Plant Characteristics

Hoya imbricata produces broad, rounded to oval leaves with a firm, slightly succulent texture. As the plant climbs, its leaves press flat against the growing surface and overlap like roof shingles, creating the distinctive imbricate growth pattern that gives the species its name.

This epiphytic Hoya performs best when allowed to climb a cork board, wooden plank, tree-fern panel, or similarly textured vertical support. Under favorable conditions, the vines may grow several feet long, while individual leaf size and shape can vary with maturity, humidity, light, and growing conditions.

Care Guide

Provide bright, filtered light and protect the foliage from intense direct afternoon sun. Water thoroughly when the growing medium begins to approach dryness, but do not allow the roots to remain constantly wet.

Hoya imbricata prefers high humidity, ideally around 70–90%, together with steady air circulation. Maintain warm temperatures between 68–85°F and protect the plant from cold drafts or temperatures below 60°F.

Use a loose, airy growing medium containing orchid bark, coco chips, perlite, and a small amount of moisture-retentive material. Excellent drainage is essential. A textured vertical mount or support is strongly recommended because the plant’s characteristic flattened leaves develop best when they can attach closely to a climbing surface. This species is generally considered an advanced-care Hoya.

Why Collectors Love It

Collectors prize Hoya imbricata for its remarkable shingling growth habit and sculptural foliage. Its ability to cover a vertical surface with overlapping leaves makes it one of the most visually distinctive Hoyas in a specialized plant collection.

I am so incredibly late on posting this video. This plant came in 3 weeks ago now and I’m just getting to posting this and I almost thought I wasn’t going to. My editing software was not working for anything, but I got it all fixed so now I can start getting out lots of videos we’ve recorded recently!🪴
