Hoya cumingiana is a charming tropical Hoya species native to the Philippines, admired for its compact growth habit, small glossy green leaves, and clusters of fragrant yellow flowers with reddish centers. Unlike many trailing Hoyas, this distinctive species develops an upright, bushy appearance, making it an excellent choice for indoor plant collections, shelves, and small growing spaces. Its unique foliage and beautiful blooms make it especially appealing to Hoya enthusiasts and tropical plant collectors.

Plant Characteristics

  • Scientific Name: Hoya cumingiana

  • Family: Apocynaceae

  • Leaf Shape: Small, oval to elliptic leaves with slightly pointed tips.

  • Leaf Texture: Smooth, thick, and glossy green foliage with a slightly succulent feel.

  • Growth Habit: Compact, upright to semi-trailing growth with branching stems.

  • Mature Size: Typically develops stems approximately 12–24 inches long, depending on growing conditions and pruning.

  • Flowers: Clusters of small, star-shaped yellow flowers with reddish centers and a pleasant fragrance.

Care Guide

  • Light: Bright, indirect sunlight. Gentle morning sunlight may encourage healthy growth and flowering.

  • Water: Allow the upper portion of the potting mix to dry between waterings. Avoid prolonged waterlogging.

  • Humidity: Moderate to high humidity, ideally around 50–80%, with good airflow.

  • Temperature: Prefers warm conditions between 65–85°F (18–29°C). Protect from cold drafts and frost.

  • Soil: Use a loose, well-draining Hoya mix containing orchid bark, perlite, and coco chips.

  • Care Level: Easy to moderate; suitable for beginners and experienced Hoya collectors.

Why Collectors Love It

Hoya cumingiana stands out for its unusual bushy growth, attractive miniature foliage, and fragrant yellow blooms. Its manageable size, relatively straightforward care requirements, and flowering potential make it a rewarding addition to any rare Hoya or tropical houseplant collection.

I am so incredibly late on posting this video. This plant came in 3 weeks ago now and I’m just getting to posting this and I almost thought I wasn’t going to. My editing software was not working for anything, but I got it all fixed so now I can start getting out lots of videos we’ve recorded recently!🪴
