Hoya Buntok Red, commonly listed as Hoya sp. ‘Buntok Red’, is a distinctive collectible Hoya admired for its attractive foliage and strong tropical character. This Indonesian Hoya selection is especially appealing to collectors who enjoy unique foliage plants with compact, vining growth and the potential for beautiful color development under suitable growing conditions.

Plant Characteristics

Hoya Buntok Red produces firm, succulent-like leaves with a smooth to slightly textured surface and an attractive elongated to oval shape. The foliage can develop deeper tones and reddish coloration when exposed to brighter filtered light, adding extra ornamental value to the plant.

Like many Hoyas, it grows as a climbing or trailing vine and performs well when trained on a trellis or allowed to cascade from a hanging pot. With proper care, mature vines can become long and well-branched while maintaining an elegant, compact-leaved appearance.

Care Guide

Provide bright, indirect light for healthy growth and stronger foliage coloration. Gentle morning sun may be beneficial, but avoid prolonged exposure to harsh midday sunlight.

Water thoroughly when the upper part of the growing medium begins to dry. Avoid keeping the roots constantly wet, as Hoyas prefer an airy root environment.

Maintain humidity around 60–80% with good air circulation. Ideal temperatures are approximately 65–85°F. Use a chunky, fast-draining tropical plant mix containing materials such as orchid bark, coco chips, perlite, and a small amount of moisture-retentive substrate.

A pot with good drainage and optional climbing support will encourage healthy growth. Hoya Buntok Red is generally considered a moderate-care Hoya suitable for growers with basic Hoya experience.

Why Collectors Love It

Collectors appreciate Hoya Buntok Red for its attractive foliage, reddish color potential, Indonesian origin, and easy-to-display vining habit. It is a beautiful choice for anyone building a diverse collection of unusual tropical Hoyas.

I am so incredibly late on posting this video. This plant came in 3 weeks ago now and I’m just getting to posting this and I almost thought I wasn’t going to. My editing software was not working for anything, but I got it all fixed so now I can start getting out lots of videos we’ve recorded recently!🪴
