Anthurium papillilaminum is a highly sought-after velvet-leaf Anthurium known for its dramatic dark foliage and elegant heart-shaped leaves. Its rich coloration, soft velvety surface, and prominent venation make it a standout tropical plant for collectors who appreciate distinctive foliage and refined texture.

Plant Characteristics

Anthurium papillilaminum develops broad, cordate leaves with a velvety texture and deep green to nearly black tones as the foliage matures. The veins often create a subtle contrast against the dark leaf surface, giving each leaf strong visual depth.

This species has a self-heading growth habit, producing new leaves from a compact central stem rather than long climbing vines. Under ideal growing conditions, mature leaves can become considerably larger and more dramatic, although final size varies depending on genetics, humidity, light, nutrition, and growing environment.

Care Guide

Provide bright, indirect light and avoid prolonged exposure to strong direct sunlight, which may damage the foliage. Water when the upper layer of the growing medium begins to dry, while keeping the root zone evenly moist but never waterlogged.

Anthurium papillilaminum prefers moderate to high humidity, ideally around 65–85%, with consistent airflow. Maintain temperatures between 65–85°F and protect the plant from cold drafts or sudden temperature changes.

Use a loose, airy, well-draining aroid mix containing ingredients such as orchid bark, coco chips, perlite, and other coarse organic materials. Good drainage and root aeration are especially important. This collectible Anthurium is best suited to growers with moderate experience.

Why Collectors Love It

Collectors love Anthurium papillilaminum for its dark velvet foliage, elegant leaf shape, and sophisticated tropical appearance. Its bold texture and strong visual character make it a prized addition to rare Anthurium and premium indoor plant collections.

I am so incredibly late on posting this video. This plant came in 3 weeks ago now and I’m just getting to posting this and I almost thought I wasn’t going to. My editing software was not working for anything, but I got it all fixed so now I can start getting out lots of videos we’ve recorded recently!🪴
