Anthurium ‘King of Spades’ Mutation is a distinctive collector Anthurium prized for its dramatic dark foliage, bold leaf form, and velvet-like surface. Commonly known in cultivation as Anthurium ‘King of Spades’ or KOS, this Indonesian collector hybrid is especially appealing to enthusiasts looking for unusual velvet-leaf Anthuriums with strong visual character.

Plant Characteristics

This King of Spades Mutation develops thick, velvety leaves with a broad heart-to-spade-shaped appearance and prominent contrasting venation. The foliage can deepen in color as it matures, creating an impressive dark tropical look. Individual mutation forms may display variations in leaf shape, proportions, texture, or growth pattern, making every specimen visually distinctive.

It has a compact, self-heading growth habit compared with many climbing aroids, producing new leaves from a central growth point. With proper growing conditions, mature plants can develop increasingly substantial foliage while maintaining their bold, sculptural appearance.

Care Guide

Provide bright, indirect light and avoid prolonged harsh direct sunlight. Water when the upper layer of the growing medium begins to dry, keeping the roots evenly moist but never waterlogged.

Maintain humidity around 60–80% with consistent air circulation. Ideal temperatures are approximately 65–85°F. Use a loose, well-draining aroid mix containing materials such as orchid bark, perlite, coco chips, and other airy components. Good drainage is essential for healthy root development. Care level is generally moderate, making this plant best suited to growers familiar with tropical Anthuriums.

Why Collectors Love It

Collectors appreciate Anthurium King of Spades Mutation for its dark velvet foliage, striking venation, and distinctive leaf expression. Its unpredictable individual characteristics make each plant an especially interesting addition to an Anthurium or rare tropical plant collection.

I am so incredibly late on posting this video. This plant came in 3 weeks ago now and I’m just getting to posting this and I almost thought I wasn’t going to. My editing software was not working for anything, but I got it all fixed so now I can start getting out lots of videos we’ve recorded recently!🪴
