Alocasia Dragon Scale Borneo (Alocasia baginda ‘Dragon Scale’) is a striking tropical aroid prized for its dramatic, heavily textured foliage that resembles the scales of a mythical dragon. This mature-size specimen showcases more established leaves, pronounced venation, and the sculptural appearance that makes Dragon Scale Alocasia highly desirable among rare plant and Alocasia collectors.
Plant Characteristics
Alocasia Dragon Scale Borneo features thick, firm leaves with a distinctive quilted or embossed texture. The foliage typically displays silvery to deep green tones contrasted by darker green veins, creating an impressive three-dimensional appearance. Its broad, shield-shaped leaves emerge from an upright, compact growth habit. As the plant matures under favorable conditions, its leaves become larger and develop increasingly prominent texture and venation.
Care Guide
Provide bright, indirect light to maintain healthy growth and attractive foliage while avoiding prolonged direct sunlight that may scorch the leaves. Water when the upper layer of the growing medium begins to dry, keeping the roots evenly moist but never waterlogged. This tropical Alocasia appreciates moderate to high humidity, ideally around 60–80%, with good airflow.
Maintain temperatures between 65–85°F (18–29°C) and protect the plant from cold drafts or sudden temperature changes. Use a loose, well-draining aroid soil mix containing materials such as coco coir, perlite, orchid bark, and other aerating components. Moderate care is recommended, particularly for growers familiar with tropical aroids.
Why Collectors Love It
Collectors love Alocasia Dragon Scale Borneo for its extraordinary scale-like leaf texture, dramatic venation, and compact yet bold appearance. Mature specimens are especially impressive because their established foliage displays the distinctive Dragon Scale characteristics more prominently.
