Overview Of The Alocasia Cuprea
Alocasia cuprea is a species of plant in the genus Alocasia native to Borneo. This species derives its name, cuprea, from the unusual coppery appearance of the leaves, which are up to 24 inches long. This is the reason why this plant got its name of the "Red Secret" plant. This color is especially pronounced on juvenile leaves, and the back of the leaf is a deep purple, but there is also a greener leaf form of the plant. While rare in cultivation, A. cuprea has been known outside its native habitat since it was brought to Europe in the 1850s by Thomas Lobb for Veitch Nurseries.
Alocasia Cuprea is native to hot humid regions, from Asia to South America. This plant has several nicknames, the most common of which are “Mirror Plant” and “Jewel Alocasia.” The leaves on this plant are very attractive. The leaves can be green or red. They are stiff and look like plastic.
The arrow-shaped leaves are what make this Alocasia plant stand out. The leaves create a focal point for any houseplant collection. This plant is a great tropical plant to mix with any tropical plant group. It's also the perfect gift for that plant-loving friend.

No matter how experienced you are with plants, it will be better for you to get to know these plants. Especially before you buy one for your home or even for your friends.

Alocasia Cuprea Plant Care :
Soil
Your Alocasia cuprea needs well-draining soil. It is a common plant in this treatment area. Well-draining soil ensures that excess water is not retained. When all that excess water is not drained, the soil becomes saturated.

Saturated soil causes some scary conditions that can kill your plants. One of the worst conditions is root rot (also known as wet feet). But well-draining soil doesn't remove too much water either. It still retains the hydration that Alocasia cuprea plants need to thrive.
You don't have to go to a garden shop to buy the right soil. You can make it yourself at home, which is definitely cheaper. A good medium for Alocasia cuprea is a mixture of coco fiber and perlite.

Coir fiber is made from coconut fruit and it works like sphagnum moss. But it has more nutrients so it costs a little more than peat moss. Coir fiber has a lot of aeration which helps remove excess water. This material has a neutral pH.

If you don't want to pay too much, you can replace it with sphagnum peat-moss.

Perlite is a mined volcanic rock. This lightweight material can withstand three times its weight in water. But it also releases extra water so it doesn't sit there. Like coir fiber, perlite has a neutral pH. You can replace perlite with Malang sand which can also hold moisture.
Light
Alocasia cuprea plants need indirect light to grow and stay healthy. The stunning leaves on this plant tend to turn yellow due to prolonged exposure to direct light. The leaves can and will die.

Without light, plants will lose their chlorophyll. When you lose chlorophyll, the green stream from your plants is lost. There is a strong chance that your plant will die from losing its chlorophyll.
The best way to get your Alocasia Cuprea light is to place it in an east or north facing window. This ensures it gets enough light to thrive but doesn't receive too much light.
Water
Watering your Alocasia Cuprea is simple. This is the same as ornamental plants in general. It requires an average amount of water. That is, the soil of the plant must be moist. But you should not soak it with water.

Over-watering is very harmful to your plants. One of the biggest causes of concern from overwatering is root rot. When the soil becomes dense due to moisture, oxygen cannot enter. Oxygen is as important as light and water for your plants.

Without the right amount of oxygen, your roots cannot breathe. The roots will start to rot. If root rot is not treated immediately, all roots become rotten. Once all the roots have rotted, your plant is done. It will die.
As we stated, over-watering is death for your Alocasia cuprea plant. And a lack of water can be deadly. If you're not sure when you should water your plants, test it. There are two simple ways to do this.

The first method involves sticking your finger into the ground. When you pull your finger out, there should be some soil stuck to it. This means your plants have hydration. If the soil is not sticking to your fingers then your Alocasia cuprea plant needs water.

The second method is similar. You put your finger on the ground up to your knuckle. It's about 5 cm deep. If the soil is hydrated, you will feel wet to this depth. But if the soil is dry in any of those a few centimeters, you need to water your plant immediately. On average, you will water your Alocasia cuprea plant two to three times a week.
Temperature
During the day, your Alocasia Cuprea plant needs a temperature range of 10 to 29 degrees Celsius. At night, the plant needs a temperature range of 12 to 18 degrees Celsius.

Humidity
An Alocasia Cuprea requires high humidity. They need humidity in the air, just like their native country. For these plants, it is best to keep the humidity between 80% and 95%. For humidity this high, your best tip is to buy a humidifier. A humidifier is good enough to increase humidity throughout the room.

Another method to try is the gravel tray method. You fill a tray full of pebbles. Once the pebbles are in place, you fill the tray with water. Water should not pass through the gravel.
Place your plant pot on top of the gravel. As the water evaporates, it creates moisture for your plants. And because it's so close to your plant, all that moisture will surround it. Some even like to place their Alocasia cuprea plant in the bathroom. Bathrooms are known for their humidity.
Fertilizer
The Alocasia cuprea plant is a super heavy absorber of nutrients. Fertilizer is an important component of thriving plants. Liquid fertilizer makes your job so much easier. You can use an all-purpose houseplant fertilizer, but you will need to dilute it to half strength.

Fertilize your plants every two weeks. But don't over-fertilize your plants. Otherwise, the salts from the fertilizer will build up on your Alocasia cuprea leaves. The accumulated salt will burn your plant's leaves.

Propagation
Propagation of Alocasia Cuprea by stem cuttings does not produce results. Instead, you can propagate them through root division and in water. Below we will cover easy steps to propagate one of these plants.

Growth
The Alocasia cuprea plant grows to only 30 cm in height. The leaves can grow between only 20 cm to 90 cm.

Re-potting
You will need to repot your Alocasia cuprea plants after two years. At that time your plant is mature and too big for its original pot. The roots need to spread. Move your plant into a pot that is only slightly larger than the original.
